The films action is based on a myth of a hero’s journey. The film’s action takes place over a large lake, one of it’s banks is inhabited by frogs. They tell stories about the ancient God –  huge Catfish, living on the other side of the waters. In the movie we follow the fate of two characters: Red Frog – a mythical hero who left home seeking the truth in his kin’s beliefs, and Little Frog – a child who wants to follow in his hero’s footsteps. As the plot reveals itself their fates are intertwined and some of the secrets are dissolved

At first glance, it seems that SQUARE lives among chaos and andless changes. But next, we can notice that the systems in which he functions, are constantly repeated, introduce a routine, hypnotize without allowing any movement. Once, a new element sneaks into the pattern, which for a moment will allow SQUARE to look a little differently at reality.

SQUARING THE CIRCLE is full of graphic metaphors, a semi-abstract story about an impossible feeling.

In the early 1900s, Belle Époque Dilili, a small-winged girl in Paris, works with her young contractor friend in a park where people from different countries were exhibited just like the zoo. In Paris, which is increasingly corrupt, women, especially young girls, are abducted by a cult, because the chiefs of this cult claim that it is caused by women.

Dilili, who will also be kidnapped but she also meets, with the help of her friend, many entellectuals like Sarah Berrnart, Louise Michel, Marie Curie, Toulouse-Lautrec, Proust, Rodin and discovers the male chiefs who lead the evils underground. Two friends struggle with enthusiasm for light and coexistence on earth.

Paris in this film, which has been redrawn over real photographs, seems like a re-written poetry.

Guest of Honour: Regina Pessoa

Regina Pessoa, born in 1969, is an Animation Director from Coimbra, Portugal. She directed and animated her first independent film in 1999 titled The Night, followed by Tragic Story with Happy Ending in 2005.

In 2012, she directed Kali the little Vampire, a co-production between Portugal-France-Canada and Switzerland. She is currently working on Accounting for the Days (working title), a co-production between Portugal-France-Canada.

Her films have gone on to win prizes around the world, including Grand Prix Annecy 2006, Grand Prix Animated Shorts SXSW 2007, Oscars 2007 Shortlist, Hiroshima Prize 2012, and has twice been a finalist for the Cartoon d’Or (in 2006 and 2013).

In all her films she uses different techniques, from plaster to computer or as she likes to say: “from stone to pixel”.

Her last film : Uncle Thomas, Accounting for the Days won Annecy 2019 Jury Grand Prix award.

Film is about the special relationship between Regina Pessoa and her uncle. The film is a testament to her love for this eccentric, who was an artistic inspiration and played a key role in her becoming a filmmaker. 

Tribute to Meral Erez

In 1972, Meral Erez graduated from the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Painting of Mimar Sinan University, she got interest in animation after her graduation and generally made short films along with Cemal Erez. In 1976-1977, with a scholarship from the Italian State, she both studied at the Istituto delle Belle Arti (Institute of Fine Arts) in Urbino, Italy and produced a 4-minute cartoon called Il Gatto (Cat).

Between the year of 1979 and 1982 she had her master’s degree in Paris at Université de Paris VIII in Cinema and Plastic Arts department. She lives between Istanbul and Paris since1979 and connects the both sides of animation and cinema with Cemal Erez. Lastly together with Cemal Erez created a 7.5 minute film for French TV France 2. Being the original name of the film as Echecs had shown in second channel of French television (France 2)in a program known as “Short Stories” (Histoires Courtres). Between years of 1992 – 1997 she worked as academician in Eskişehir Anatolian University of Fine Arts Faculty for Animation Department. Her lectures caused to create the graduation films of students within the scope of project Film Language and Film Management. In 1995, in the Z-1 Cartoon Workshop that director Yavuz Özkan was the founder, she gave ‘cartoon’ course with an understanding based primarily on the cinematic dimension.

Meral Erez in 2000 took the role of a jury in the most important festival and market of the animation world in France which is the Annecy International Film Festival Short and Feature Film Competition. In the years 2003 and 2004 she gave the lectures of “Entrance to Cinema and Cinema of Animation” to first grade students private visual arts college of Lisaa.
Since 2007, she has been working at Kadir Has University, Faculty of Communication and Department of Advertising. She teaches “Visual Expression” and “Creativity”.

Melis Balcı
Melis Balci is an independent animation filmmaker, living and working in Istanbul. After graduating from Sabanci University, Visual Communication Design in 2012, she co-directed her first animation film Merkür in 2015 with Ege Okal. She is having her masters degree in Film&Drama/Directing at Kadir Has University.

Mesure Melis Bilgin
1980, İstanbul. Artist and scholar. After graduating from Robert College, Istanbul, Melis received her undergraduate degree from Bennington College, USA, where she studied visual arts and theatre and worked in New York. Upon returning to Turkey, she worked in stage productions, after which she received her master’s and PhD in film from Istanbul Bilgi University and Marmara University respectively. She acted as a director, assistant director and dramaturg in various Off-Broadway plays and musicals in New York and worked as assistant director at Ridge Theatre’s production of the opera “Klinghoffer” at BAM. Her artwork has been exhibited and screened at numerous exhibitions and festivals around the world, traveling cities including Amsterdam, Berkeley, Ljubljana, Mannheim, Milano, Paris, Prague, Rotterdam and Varna. The artist, whose video-performances and animation work has been screened in Turkey at Istanbul Modern, CerModern and the Istanbul International Film Festival, has received international and national awards with her short animation “Tetrist.” Working as an interdisciplinary artist, Melis continues to live in Istanbul, produce and write in the fields of short film, animation, video performance and visual arts and works as an assistant professor at Istanbul Bilgi University.

İdil Ar Uçaner
Idil Ar Uçaner is working as an animation director, illustrator and character designer.for more than 12 years. After graduating from Mimar Sinan University – Industrial Design Department, she made her master degree in Berlin – Kunsthochshule Weissensee. During her studies in Berlin, she met the magical world of animation and passionately decided to be a part of it as an animation director. Now she has a 3 years old daughter. After giving birth to Yonca, Children’s Books naturally took a part of her daily life… She read and keeps on reading lots of books with her daughter and finally decided to create her own children book afterwards. Nowadays, she is working on her first book as an author and illustrator as well. Her last film ‘’The Garden’’ won ’Best Children’s Film Award’’ in Uppsala Short Film Festival 2017 in Sweden. The Garden has been screened in more than100 international film festivals around the globe. She also occasionally teaches animation and design to children between 3-6 years old and young adults in several academic and voluntary classes. She enjoys teaching and also learns a lot from children as well.

Özgül Gürbüz
She was born in 1980 in Eskişehir. In 2004, he graduated from Anadolu University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Animation. After working as a research assistant at the same university until 2006, she came to Istanbul. Between 2006 and 2017, she worked as a character model at Anima Istanbul Animation Studio. As a full-time team member in the animation industry, she gained experience in various projects such as short / full-length animated films, series and commercials. Since 2017, she has been working with his teammates at the BAU Galata VR First Lab to produce independent short animated films throughout her career.
